The Christmas season for the Pulaski County Christmas Store was one of intensive labor. The week before Thanksgiving was spent moving our inventory to what was once Dublin Primary School Building. With this accomplished we began preparing for the Christmas season.
PCCS held 6 intake sessions in September and October and this resulted in 309 families signing up for Christmas assistance. We added 20 more families during our season due to change in circumstances in their living situations that made them eligible for assistance. The number of children of these families totaled 710. We collaborated with First United Methodist Church in Pulaski and they provided Christmas dinners for 50 families that had signed up with PCCS.
Eligibility requirements for assistance from the Pulaski County Christmas Store are income based, using current Food Stamp guild lines and the children reside full time with the applicant. We only serve families that reside in Pulaski County. Each child receives pants and shirt, coat or shoes and 2 items (toys, CDs. jewelry, etc.) that they would want for Christmas.
Of the 329 families whose applications were processed, 7 families were removed from our inventory due to requests from churches, individuals and organizations who wished to adopt a family to provide their Christmas. Salvation Army held intakes in the county for Christmas assistance and we compared our list with them. This resulted in 32 families that had applied with both PCCS and Salvation Army. We kept 16 of these families and Salvation Army kept the same number.
Pulaski County Christmas Store purchased gifts for 125 families (271 children). Organizations and folks in the community assisted our efforts and 179 families (385 children) were served through gifts bought by others.
Four years ago we began holding Grandparents Day after we had distributed all the gifts for the families. We realized, through the generosity of Toys for Tots, that we were continuing to receive toys from them after all the request had been filled from our intakes. This had been a wonderful way to end our Christmas season. The grandparents that come have not been able to give their grandchildren a present for Christmas for a variety of reasons. This year, the weather was terrible, cold and icy but we had a crowd. We were able to serve 408 grandchildren. One grandfather had 10 grandchildren. This is always an emotional day, as these grandparents are truly grateful that a resource is available to them.
Another note of interest is that in the application process of the 329 families, 61 of the applicants were grandparents raising grandchildren. (78 children) Every year, PCCS is seeing an increase in the number of grandparents raising grandchildren.
